The mom Big FIVE

I have mentioned before that my husband is from Zimbabwe, and people often ask if we saw wildlife on our last trip there, they always speak of The Big Five. What are the big five you may ask? According to Wikipedia
The phrase Big Five game was coined by hunters and refers to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot. The term is still used in most tourist and wildlife guides that discuss African wildlife safaris. The collection consists of the lion, African elephant, cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. The members of the Big Five were chosen for the difficulty in hunting them and the degree of danger involved, rather than their size.
Well in navigating the mom world, I think we have our own BIG FIVE!
  1. circumcision
  2. breastfeeding vs formula feeding
  3. vaccinations
  4. cloth diapering vs disposable
  5. family bed/co-sleeping vs crib

Do you dare to discuss these? It has been said, even on our boards that it would be easier to discuss Religion and Politics!!

In the mom world, it can be like a minefield to open up and discuss any of these topics, and many just stay silent. Afraid of the judgement that may be passed, and unsure of our decisions, did we do the right thing in regards to _______ .

I think these are the most important topics we can discuss. We need advice from those who have been there and done that before us. What we do NOT need is judgement and to be made to feel that our decision was wrong.

So I think us moms can start to change this. Be open to a discussing THE BIG FIVE . Offer advice, what worked for you. What didn't work. Why did you make the choice you did. This is what moms need, especially when we are just learning how to be a mom... We could spend all day on Google, and sometimes we just want to hear from a friendly voice that they too struggled with their decision, but this is why they decided what they did.

What else would you add to THE LIST?

  1. Awesome post Tanya, and SO true. I think these are the things we all have questions about, and are terrified to ask.
