Little Scientists: Wind Socks

Today our little scientists discovered the wind!

The first thing we had to do was decorate our wind socks.

Then with some help from the moms (wink) we put the finishing touches on the wind socks and then we had to try them out!

We discovered which direction the wind was blowing, when it was stronger and how to capture the wind to keep our wind socks in the air

I have seen some pictures already of our wind socks at their new homes and their creators still enjoying watching them blow in the wind.

Join us next month when we discover science again!

Baby Bucket Brunch

A few of us moms met to enjoy a late brunch with our babies.

One of us (read me) thought it was a good idea to have maple syrup within arms reach of not one of my children but two. SO of course both of them got into it, and I am still finding stickiness on everything!! From their hat to their clothes, the bucket car seat, to my shirt and pants, yup all covered in syrup. It is truly amazing how fast they can be when they want to get into something!

Oh well, made for great laugh or three at my expense, and the morning was a great time!

Please consider joining us for the next event, I might even remember to skip the syrup!

Red Cross Personal Disaster Preparedness Course

As quoted from the Canadian Red Cross's website
Disasters can strike quickly and without warning. If a hazardous material leak required your family to evacuate or a severe winter storm confined your family at home, would you know what to do? An earthquake, flood, tornado, or any other disaster could cut water, electricity, and telephones for hours or days. Could you keep your family warm and fed?
I know that I don't know. I think a lot of us have the "it wont happen to me" attitude. But now I think firstly of the Fire that engulfed Slave Lake last year. What would I do if that happened here?

momstown and the Canadian Red Cross are partners and offering a free course titled "Personal Disaster Preparedness Course" and I want to invite you to attend!

It's a 1 hour workshop where our volunteers will go through exactly how to make a grab-and-go kit for the house and car. The preparedness message lies at the heart of Red Cross disaster management efforts.

While we won't have child care available, there won't be any problem with having children at the workshops. We will try to baby-proof the rooms as much as possible, but please note, this is an office space so we cannot completely baby-proof the room.

Junior Chef: Crackle Nests

Today we made crackle nests, fitting with our monthly theme of baby animals this month!

Everyone had great fun adding their share of the ingredients, stirring and decorating their creations!

We cannot forget the very best part, the taste test. Our junior chefs became quite discerning jelly bean flavor aficionados.

These crackle nests are super easy and use everyday ingredients that are usually found in your cupboard, we added jelly bean eggs as an extra treat.

Alberta Provincial Election 2012: Mom the Vote!

DISCLAIMER: This blog post is NOT about convincing you to vote for a particular party or candidate. Promise. It is about getting you out to Vote. Not just voting, but lets MOM THE VOTE.

Do you know who you are voting for this election?
I have found this to be really helpful, lets you see where your views align with what political party.

As moms we have strong opinions on the issues that affect our families, right? So we need to use these ideas and opinions and make sure these opinions are heard. The only REAL way to do this is to make sure you vote on Monday in Alberta's provincial election.

Why am I writing about this? Well I have a husband who is from a place where voting is not "free and fair". Where if you speak out against the government, you can be killed. Its cliche to say we should appreciate that we live in a pretty free and fair country/province.

Do we really realize how lucky we are to be able to vote freely without threat of repercussions if we vote against ANYTHING or ANYONE.

So please, use your voice, VOTE. Better yet, Lets MOM THE VOTE!!

Scholastic book of the month I AM SMALL

We had the privilege of reading and giving away the book I AM SMALL by Emma Dodd.
It is a wonderful book about being little but at the same time being the biggest thing in the world to the ones that love us! What a great sentiment!

The kids loved the illustrations and think Penguins are pretty fabulous so we incorporated this craft from momstown Winnipeg that paired beautifully with this wonderful story.

momstown Central Alberta member Kayleigh was lucky enough to be the one to take home a copy of the book for her family!!

Join us next month at our Tales for Tots event and you could win a copy of our Scholastic book of the month too!

momstown Monet: Charley the Chicken

It was our monthly craft event momstown Monet!
We are lucky enough to hold this event at the beautiful Bla Bla Junior store in Lacombe!

The first thing the kids did was try out a few of the toys before we got crafty!

Then we got busy creating out "Charley's" out of a wooden spoon and felt!

Then we had a few that proudly showed out their masterpieces!

And then with all the wonderful stuff in the store, the kids found more things to try out and play with!
Join Us next month for our momstown Monet Program at Bla Bla Junior!!

Bribery: Have you used it?

Bribery. It can be a slippery slope.
Have you used it? Better yet, will you admit to it?

You know your pre-child self and all the things you swore you would never do, was bribery on this list? Have you gone back on your word?

I rarely use this, rarely, I KNOW it is a slippery slope, that once you use it, you always have to...

BUT we have so much chocolate in our house, and I really needed to get out of the house this morning....so I did it, I offered Chocolate to get little people dressed and out of the house. And you know what... IT WORKED!! LIKE A CHARM!!

Two year old toddler got her shoes and coat on with no fuss, all the while reciting "chocat""chocat". No tears, no tantrum, and only a small "chocat" beard to show for it

So, will you admit to using this? Special occasions? Everyday Parenting tactic?

Come on fess up.... make the rest of us feel better!!

What Kind of Wife Are You?

A hopping topic on our message board as of late is a question posed about whether you make your husband's lunch.

As of now it is 74% No 25% Yes

What is your take? Do you? Why or Why Not?

For the record, I do not, unless specifically asked if he is running late, otherwise he is on his own.

Planting Baskets at the Jungle Farm

There was still snow on the ground, but we were in a Spring mood when we arrived at The Jungle Farm for our planting baskets event!

We had to dress in layers, because of the snow, the mud and the warmth of the greenhouse.

I love this idea, as my plants now have a better fighting chance that they may last until mothers day, since that is when I will be picking them up! You see we did the choosing of the plants, and the planting, but the Jungle Farm is going to babysit our baskets for us in their greenhouses!!

There was even time to play after our green thumbs had a workout!
We cannot wait to go back for strawberry season!!
