5 great tips to getting started on the path to healthy eating and fitness

Dani Thorburn's journey to becoming a Certified Fitness Trainer began after she had her second child (just 17 months after her first - yikes).  She found herself really struggling; 80 pounds heavier, out of shape, weak - she had become a person she didn't recognize anymore.  Knowing something was wrong she made an appointment with her family doctor and was diagnosed with Post-Partum Depression… fortunately for her she began her recovery at the gym and hasn't looked back since!

Dani has given us 5 great tips to getting started on the path to healthy eating and fitness - even if you are a busy mama chasing after kids!

1.  Meal plan, meal plan!

This is huge  Sit down on Sunday plan out your meals and snacks for the week and write out your grocery list as you are doing this (this is a great way to stay on budget too)! If there is prep that can be done try to do it (ie: wash lentils, fruit, veggies and have them cut up ready to grab or cook with.  If you have your meals planned ahead you are less likely to skip a meal or go the quick and easy route (drive-thru anyone?)  Dani's very affordable boot camps include a food journal and nutrition consultation to get you on track.

2.     Workout Same Time Everyday!

Decide on a time of day to workout and stick with it! It will eventually become routine. This might mean getting up before the kids, or squeezing it in after they have gone to sleep! So very important to be faithful to your time! A healthy mama is a fun and happy mama!  Dani offers one-on-one personal training if you need someone to show up and hold you accountable when you are just starting out.

3.        Water, water, water!

Just consuming the proper amount of water can help with weight loss!  Try to keep your alotted amount of water in the fridge everyday so you can keep track.  Have a litre of water first thing in the morning before letting yourself have that morning cup of java!

4.         All Or Nothing = Failure

Being a busy mamas we just can't  always do our sweat dripping, I'm exhausted, and my muscles are burning workouts all the time.  If we decide that we won't do fitness otherwise - -we will probably fail.  Find other ways to squeeze fitness in when life gets in the way - go for a walk with your hubby, run and play at the park with your kids.  Having said that, Dani is more than happy to knock you on your butt every now and again and offers small group classes, including TRX, kettlebells, Xfit and weight training - maybe get some girlfriends together so you can all make a commitment together?

5.         Keep Your Muscles Guessing!

Doing the same thing over and over will usually lead to a plateau or a stop in weight loss - you also don't need big fancy equipment to have a good workout -Use your bodyweight! Meet with Dani once a month to give you a new at home work-out program.  The options are limitless!
